Present answer: James Bond is somewhere between 51 and 52 years old.
That was the age of the latest in a line of actors when he played the fictional Agent 007 on-screen, at the time of filming in 2019.*
That Daniel Craig James Bond will never get any older. Not because of the way the movie in which he appeared has ended. Rather, more simply — because he is no longer under contract as a James Bond, according the powers that be.
Time was when Ian Fleming, who created James Bond, and, for a while, defined the man and his world, had final say on this matter.
Barry Nelson, as lead in the first adaptation of Casino Royale (1953) was 37 when his portrayal was broadcast on American television.
And in 1955, Mr Fleming in his Moonraker novel specified an identically seasoned Double-0, with a mandatory end to field assignments upon celebration of his forty-fifth birthday {page 16}.
The center of authority changed in 1961 when a final deal was struck, moving paper to celluloid and creating a nexus that has proven indispensable to underpinning the franchise of today.
By the end of that decade, James Bond was almost twelve months younger — averaged among four actors and eight appearances. Ten years later, then five actors in the cadre, and six months past forty was the aggregate.
Today, the five oldest James Bond appearances are as follows.
- At 57 years, two-or-so months: Roger Moore, in A View to a Kill (1985)
- At 56 years, plus-or-minus seven months: David Niven, in Casino Royale (1967)
- At 55 years, three-to-four months: Roger Moore, in Octopussy (1983)
- At 53 years, three months: Roger Moore, in For Your Eyes Only (1981)
- At 51 years, one-to-two months: Daniel Craig, in No Time to Die (2021).
Beginning with James Bond at closer to 37½-years-old in 1954, the rolling average of increasing debut portrayals of the fictional character settled-in at 40 (and a bit) in 1973 and has remained there ever since.
Including cumulative portrayals from 1954 onward, the average age of Agent 007 per storyline broached 43 years, at five actors and 17 installments.
In 2021, at eight actors and 28 stories, James Bond looked to be a couple of weeks or so shy of his forty-forth birthday.
_____
* Consistent with all other actor-age references herein, “filming” date. The spread between onset of post-production and release for No Time to Die was obviously exceptional: At the time of its premier in 2021, Daniel Craig (as Bond? post-Bond?) was past 53½-years-old, moving him up to the position of fourth-eldest 007 after Roger Moore in Octopussy.
